Solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured lipid carriers of dual functionality at emulsion interfaces. Part I: Pickering stabilisation functionality

Solid lipid nanoparticles and nanostructured carriers are two types of nanoparticulate systems, that have been primarily studied for their capability to function as active carriers, only more recently utilised in Pickering emulsion stabilisation. Unveiling the factors impact upon particle characteristics related functionality could enable development a liquid formulation with tailored microstructure potentially capacity display two-fold performance. In part I, this work investigates how certain characteristics, namely solid-to-liquid mass ratio presence unadsorbed surfactant aqueous carrier phase, affect structural properties particles, turn these influence stabilisation capacity. The effect parameters was assessed terms wettability physicochemical including size, crystallinity interfacial behaviour. Lipid particles fabricated higher content (70% w/w) were shown be hydrophilic lower decoration at surface compared containing or no crystalline matrix. ability through mechanism confirmed all using polarised microscopy. Increasing removal excess did not compromise capacity, though droplets larger sizes initially acquired latter case. particle-stabilised emulsions maintained physical integrity, retaining close association interface over storage period 12 weeks.
